Hi, my name is Nisa.

I am a coffee obsessed registered nurse

and entrepreneur.

I am a registered nurse who is very interested in healthcare strategy & disruptive healthcare innovation.

At present my specialization & interest is in innovating safety (occupational health & safety and patient safety). My career, my academic work/research and extra curricular involvement with associations focuses on these two.

When you think of capital planning, organization’s typically focus on 3 core capitals (some have additional capitals depending on the industry), that is financial capital, social capital and human capital. Human capital is defined as the skills, knowledge, and experience possessed by an individual or population, viewed in terms of their value or cost to an organization. My interests and graduate work is focused on embedding the component of “safety” into the human capital component; making it a mandatory key indicator of corporate performance.

As Sir Richard Branson says “Take care of your employees and your employees will take care of your customers” (in healthcare this could be the patients/patient satisfaction). Employees need to be happy and healthy in order to produce; whether its a business in the private sector, whether its the business of healthcare or the public sector, your employees ARE your business. Without employees - you have nothing. Its a simple equation, unhappy employees = lack of production/outputs/service = unhappy customers/patients & poor outcomes.

The Centre for Safety and Health Sustainability describes it the best:

An organization’s human capital includes the skills, knowledge and abilities that workers bring to their work and how they use them. Effective occupational health and safety (OHS) management helps workers safely operate in their work environments, making OHS a foundational element of human capital. Effective management of an organization’s human capital underpins corporate performance and sustainability.
